Hello Teacher friends! I have a free count the room activity for you! It is bumble bee themed, so it’s perfect for Spring! Have you ever done a count the room or write the room with your students? It is my students’ FAVORITE station and one of mine too! It’s so simple and easy to prep- just print and laminate the cards and hang them in various places around the room. Students will grab a clipboard and their recording sheet, and walk around the room searching for cards. This particular count the room is for numbers 1-20. It’s great for practicing counting with 1:1 correspondence, number recognition, and number writing. I love to have one station group do this at a time. It’s great to have 4-5 kids up and moving around! Grab your free count the room at the end of this post!

Free Halloween Roll and Write Math Activity!

Happy Spooky Season, teachers! I have a free Halloween roll and write math activity that I wanted to share with you! The best part is that you can totally differentiate for your kiddos! This is a great activity to practice subitizing, number ID, and number formations! This works great for a low prep math center, an early finishers activity, or morning work!  The students roll one or two dice, and then they will count and color, trace, or write the numbers. This is great because you can give some students one die and others 2 dice- easy differentiation!

How to Differentiate this Halloween Roll and Write

I have included 3 versions of this Halloween roll and write math activity. Roll and Color, Roll and Trace, and Roll and Write. Each activity comes in both color and black and white, and one and two dice options!

Roll and Color- for your students that just need subitizing, 1:1 counting, and number identification. They can roll the dice and color the number. This comes in one and two dice options!

Roll and Trace- Students will practice subitizing, 1:1 counting, and number formation with tracing help. Students roll one or two dice.

Roll and Write- students practice subitizing, 1:1 counting, number identification, and number formation independently, without the help of tracing.

This Halloween roll and write activity is even further differentiated by the ability to use one or two dice! I also love that it is very low prep!

If you need more October center ideas that are low or no prep, check some out below!

Morning Meeting Games for Kindergarten

Hello friends!

As we go back to school, I wanted to share some of my favorite morning meeting games for kindergarten. These morning meeting games build a sense of community that is so important in kindergarten! I remember my first year teaching Kindergarten, my principal was very strict and wanted us to jump into reading instruction using this fancy reading program she had purchased. She wanted us to jump right in on the FIRST day and SKIP MORNING MEETING! I was a newbie fresh meat teacher, so I did everything exactly as she said. There I was, the first day of school, reading from a reading program while my students were bouncing off the walls. My students wanted to get to know their friends and their teachers and get acquainted with school, not listen to a reading program on the first day!

Needless to say, I have honed my skills since then, and now I ALWAYS start the day with morning meeting. My favorite part is the morning meeting games and activities, and I wanted to share some quick, easy, and fun games you can use for morning meeting in kindergarten, prek, and first grade.

The Blanket Game

The Blanket Game

This is one of my favorite morning meeting games! Have your kiddos sit on the edge of your carpet. Choose one kid to be the “guesser”- that student leaves the circle and closes their eyes (I usually have them face the wall). While their eyes are closed, the class counts backwards from 10 or 20 while you pick one student to hide under the blanket (or shower curtain or box). Then, the “guesser” comes back to the circle and tries to guess who is under the blanket! It is great because they can ask their friends questions as hints (ex: is it a boy? what letter does their name start with?, etc.)

Beginning Sound Beach Ball

Beginning Sound Beach Ball

This is a fun and low prep morning meeting game- all you need is a beach ball and a sharpie! Write the letters on the beach ball, and students can take turns throwing the ball around! I usually have them sit or stand in a circle and call out a friend’s name before they throw the ball. When their friend catches the ball, they will say the letter that is closest to their thumb! You can have them say the letter, beginning sound, something that the letter starts with, or a mix of all! You could also write CVC or sight words on a ball for later in the year.

Sofia Says!

Sofia Says

Sofia says is just like Simon says, but it’s time for Simon to take a break! You could play this game the traditional way- or turn it into a math game! I have created a Sofia Says math game where students work on active listening, counting to 10, patterns, counting backwards, shapes, number ID, and more! It’s great to play for morning meeting because it gets them up and moving. You can check it out here!

This or That Yoga and Free Questions Game

Both of these games are similar! Students do yoga while answering questions about themselves! It’s great for morning meeting, indoor recess, or a brain break! With this or that, there are 60 questions and students get to choose between two answers. It can be used all year! The FREE questions game has 9 yes or no questions- great for the first week or two of school! Click the images below to check out each game:

These games and much more are included in my morning meeting games and activities bundle!

My Favorite Back to School Books for Kindergarten! (Freebie Below)

Back to school time is mix of emotions for most teachers, it can be exiting, anxiety inducing, and everything in between! Back to school for kindergarten can be all of those things- but it’s mostly magical! As you navigate back to school, consider these kindergarten back to school books that can help the transition be a little smoother! I have also included a freebie for one of my favorites- The King of Kindergarten!

Books for Missing Home

My favorite kindergarten back to school book for missing family (especially moms) is The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. In this adorable story, Chester the Raccoon is about to start school. He is anxious to start school and leave his mom, that is, until she kisses his hand! When doing so, she tells Chester that whenever he feels lonely or misses mom, squeeze his hand and he will feel mom’s love. This is a great kindergarten back to school book, especially for those kiddos that are leaving mom for the first time!

I also love “Llama Llama Misses Mama” by Anna Dewdney. This is another story about back to school fears! Great for discussing those fears with your kindergarteners and for insuring them that their parents will come back at the end of the day!

Kindergarten Back to School Books about Being Confident and Being Yourself!

The King of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes and Vanessa Brantley- Newton is a GREAT overall story about starting kindergarten. It helps students to gain confidence and get an overall understanding of what kindergarten will be like. I LOVE to read this book on the first day of school and have the students make their own King/Queen of Kindergarten Hats! You can grab these hats for FREE by signing up for my newsletter below!

Our Favorite Day of the Year by A.E. Ali is quickly becoming a staple in my classroom. I have such a diverse group of students, and this is a great book about having the confidence to teach your friends about your favorite holiday- even if it’s something they don’t celebrate. In this book, the teacher explains that her favorite day of the year is the first day of school. The kids can’t believe that her favorite day is the first day of school! Musa’s favorite day is Eid, Mo’s favorite day is Shanah Tovah, Moises’ favorite day is Las Posadas, and Kevin’s favorite day is Pi Day! Join the kids as they teach others about their favorite day of the year and embrace their differences!

Hi Teachers! I’m not sure about you, but digital guided reading groups have been an interesting challenge during virtual learning! Of course, things are not going to look the same as in the classroom, and the activities need to be tweaked.

However, I have been so proud of my kindergarteners! They have been using my digital emergent readers to do great things during digital guided reading. I use them with Pear deck on google slides, but I also have them for seesaw!

It’s nice to be able to share the screen with google slides, and then assign the digital emergent readers on seesaw for them to complete! I love that there is a simple reader, word work, picture matching, and vocabulary all in one reader!

A growing number of themes to keep kids engaged!

I am continuing to add to this growing bundle! So far, this bundle has color books, animals, winter, Christmas, MLK Day, Groundhog Day, and Chinese New Year. I am working on the Valentine’s day books now! These will be great to add to your digital guided reading library!

With the simple reader, students can highlight sight words and practice their reading strategies.

The second activity in this digital emergent reader bundle is a “make the picture match” activity. This is by far my students’ favorite activity! They read the sentence and choose which picture makes sense. This is great for practicing early reading skills and will make digital guided more engaging!

There are also word work activities included with the digital emergent readers. Students will drag and drop letters to make sight words, fill in missing sounds, make cvc words, and more!

Each reader also includes a word work and vocabulary review! This is kind of like a picture walk but for digital guided reading!

Keep in mind that this bundle is GROWING! That means if you grab it now, you will get every current book I have made and future books at the current discounted price! I will also be adding printables to this set. Grab it before the price increases!
